A Word of Welcome by the Minister of Defence

Dear Conference Participants,

Allow me to avail myself of this occasion to extend a warm welcome to you and to invite you to Slovenia. I am greatly honoured that the Ministry of Defence and the Slovenian Armed Forces host the 4th International Regional Conference titled “Counter-Terrorism Challenges in South Eastern Europe” which we organise together with the Center for Civil-Military Relations in Monterey, the Embassy of the United States and the Institute for Corporate Security Studies.

International terrorism poses a serious threat to national and international security. Counter-terrorism can only be effective through close cooperation of various bodies at the national and international levels. Therefore, joint efforts of experts from national, non-national, academic and international institutions represent an important factor in the process of fighting terrorism in South Eastern Europe. Indeed, the purpose of the International Regional Conference is to enhance cooperation as well as the exchange of experiences and good practice in fighting this pressing threat. The main topic of the upcoming conference is interagency cooperation and coordination of activities regarding the processes of critical infrastructure protection. In terms of its contents, the conference is an upgrade of the international conferences held in 2007, 2008 and 2010 in Slovenia, which addressed different aspects of the roles and responsibilities as well as the need for active coordination and systematic action of individual bodies from national security and international environment in the area of counter-terrorism.

I look forward to meeting you at the upcoming conference. You are all most welcome to attend the event.

Dr. Ljubica Jelušič
Minister of Defence of the Republic of Slovenia
