LOCATION OF CONFERENCE

PRESENTATION OF »KADETNICA«, THE HOST LOCATION OF THE INTERNATIONAL REGIONAL CONFERENCE »COUNTER-TERRORISM CHALLENGES IN THE REGION OF SOUTH EASTERN EUROPE«

Historical perspective

“Kadetnica” in Maribor was built between 1853 and 1856 as “Kadetteninstitut” of the Austro-Hungarian Empire. Until 1870 it was used for the training of Austro-Hungarian Army cadets. Until the end of World War I it comprised also an infantry military post, military hospital and non-commissioned officer school. During the period of the Kingdom of Yugoslavia it first hosted Technical Officer Candidate School and later Engineer Non-Commissioned Officer School. During World War II it housed the German army military post. When World War II ended, it was used by the Yugoslav People's Army until the end of the War for Slovenia when it was taken over by the Territorial Defence of the Republic of Slovenia. In 1992 the building was handed over to the local community which, however, was not able to think of appropriate activities to be carried out in “Kadetnica”. Therefore, in 2000, the Ministry of Defence of the Republic of Slovenia and the Slovenian Armed Forces started with renovation activities which concluded in 2009.

“Kadetnica” was renovated with the following purposes:

- Developmental (to put up a building able of conducting scientific-research and educational activities),

- Historical (to reconstruct the original appearance of the building, to restore its purpose and to put up a permanent collection of the Military Museum of the Slovenian Armed Forces),

- Cultural (to preserve military architectural heritage of national and international significance).
